The Royal Albert Hall is one of the most renowned stages in the world. Over its 153-year history, it has hosted an extraordinary array of artists, athletes, and activists. Among them are such iconic figures as Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Muhammad Ali, Ella Fitzgerald, The Beatles, and Adele. The Hall has also played a pivotal role in British history, serving as the venue for the "Votes for Women" rally, hosting the Stonewall concert, and celebrating Nelson Mandela’s state visit as a "Hall of Freedom" for the Suffragettes.

Its unique history includes hosting events as diverse as indoor marathons and the world’s first bodybuilding contest, where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle served as a judge. Each year, the Hall’s legendary auditorium welcomes around 400 world-class events spanning rock, pop, classical music, theatre, dance, cinema, Cirque du Soleil, and sports. While attracting 1.8 million visitors annually, the Hall also makes use of its ancillary spaces to host over 1,000 events, drawing in younger and more diverse audiences.

The Hall’s engagement programme includes music therapy sessions, community concerts, and workshops led by world-class artists. Many of these activities are delivered in partnership with charities such as Nordoff Robbins and Music for Youth, extending vital support to their missions.

Looking ahead to the next 150 years, the Hall aspires to remain a place of curiosity and wonder. In 1991, as part of the Japan Festival, the Royal Albert Hall became a venue for Grand Sumo Wrestling. In 2025, the Hall will once again host a Grand Sumo Tournament in this iconic building, working in collaboration with Askonas Holt.
A 1500 YEAR OLD ART
Sumo’s roots can be traced back as far as 1500 years. Indeed, according to legend,
the very origin of the Japanese race depended on a Sumo match.
The Sport of the Gods, which is rarely seen outside of Japan, is not only a spectacular sporting experience
but is enriched with ancient ritual and ceremony. It is more than 30 years since Sumo last visited the UK.
